Andrew Jolivette headlines World AIDS Day at UCR

Description:  Andrew Jolivette (Opelousa/Atakapa-Ishak) Ph.D., will speak about how race and sexuality intersect to create social and sexual risk. Jolivette is an associate professor in American Indian Studies, Educational Leadership, and Critical Race and Resistance Studies at San Francisco State University. His work spans many different social and political arenas - from education reform and cultural representation in Native America to community of color identity issues, critical mixed-race movement building, LGBT/Queer community of color identity issues and gay marriage, and AIDS disparities within Indigenous and people of color communities. Part of The Well's Educational Speaker Series, this talk is supported by the Committee on HIV/AIDS in recognition of World AIDS Day.

  • Intro to Sexually Transmitted Diseases focuses on how STD's are transmitted, identifying high-, medium-, and low-risk behaviors, and highlighting the importance of safer sex practices and getting tested. This workshop works best in smaller groups (less than 50 people) and takes 1 hour.
  • HIV/AIDS focuses on some of the environmental or external factors that could raise someone's risk for getting HIV, as well as some of the social issues surrounding HIV, how different groups are treated in our society, what challenges someone who is HIV positive might have to face. This workshop works best in a smaller group (less than 50 people) and takes 1 hour.
